It is less expensive and a lot easier to prevent than correct.
If I had a dime for every time Ive heard a patient told me that they regretted how they treated their skin in the past with excessive sun exposure or putting skin care on the backburner I could buy a Gucci. 9 years into aesthetics, Ive treated patients ages 20-90, all different skin types and concerns. If you can get a jump start on skin care and educating yourself on what treatments and products you can start at a young age, youll thank yourself in the future.
As a mom of two kids under 10, I know how it is with putting our kids and family first and putting the needs of our own aside. There is NO shame in investing in yourself and taking care of your skin. This is more than skin, this is self esteem. We spends thousands on upkeep on our houses, companies, pets, yards however spending hundreds of dollars a year is hard for a lot of women to come to terms with.
When I say its less expensive to prevent Im referring to facelifts that cost 30-50k, deep laser treatments that cost 3-5k that would give the best results for someone that has done alot of damage to their skin in the past. As opposed to avoiding getting your skin tanned or burned, twice a year collagen building treatments (microneedling, IPL, chemical peels) that cost $300-$400. $300-$500 a year on medical grade products. Although my speciality is in non-invasive treatments and I cant speak much on surgery, but surgery is not where its begins or it ends. The skin still ages after a facelift for example. These days there are so many advanced treatments to stimulate collagen that may put off the need for surgery in the future. 80% of our aging is from the sun, environmental factors and smoking. 20% is genetic.
NUMBER ONE before you start investing in skin treatments is use a good sunscreen. Look for sunscreens with Zinc and/or Titanium Dioxide at least a 30 SPF and if you are fair, 50 SPF. Its important to reapply your sunscreen because it wears off. If you wear face makeup and you cant put sunscreen lotion over your makeup, so look for SPF powders such as Is Clinicals Perfect Tint Powder which comes in 6 different shades. We get the most damage between the hours of 10am-2pm and by then our sunscreen has worn off. Wear wide brimmed hats on beach days, Wear hats when in the sun longer than 2 hours. Wear UV and polarized sunglasses to avoid squinting. If you ever seen me outside watching sports, Im the one always covered up under an umbrella, hat and sunglasses reapplying my sunscreen. The minutes add up over time, even if its a 5 minute errand in 100 degree weather.
