5 Things To Consider When Buying Your First Laser or Energy Device

When purchasing a laser for your medical spa, it's essential to consider several factors to ensure you choose the right equipment for your needs and to provide the best possible services for your clients. Here are five key considerations:

1. Types of Treatments Offered:

- Versatility: Determine whether the laser can perform multiple types of treatments such as hair removal, skin resurfacing, tattoo removal, or vascular treatments.

If your patient demographics are primarily ethnic skin or darker skin types, IPL or BBL would not be a great option due to the high risk of burning. IPL and BBL absorb high amounts of melanin. Look for lasers or devices that are safer for darker skin such as RF Microneedling, Nd: Yag, or dual wavelengths.

- Specificity: Ensure the laser is effective for the particular treatments you plan to offer, with proven efficacy and safety for those applications. Ask laser companies for white papers.

2. Laser Technology:

- Wavelength and Power: Different lasers operate at different wavelengths, which affect their suitability for various treatments and skin types. Ensure the laser's specifications align with your treatment goals.

- Cooling Mechanisms: Advanced cooling systems can enhance patient comfort and safety during treatments, reducing the risk of burns or other complications.

3. Cost and Return on Investment (ROI):

- Initial Investment: Consider the upfront cost of the laser and whether it fits within your budget.

- Maintenance and Consumables: Factor in the costs associated with maintenance, repairs, and any consumable parts that will need regular replacement.

- ROI Analysis: Evaluate how quickly you can recoup your investment based on your pricing structure, anticipated patient volume, and treatment costs.

-Patient base- Do you have an established patient base you can offer new laser treatments to? Often new medspa owners will purchase a laser hoping to bring patients in based on offering laser treatments to quickly find out it is a not a “offer it and they will come.” It’s best to have an established patient base to easily convert patients over to laser.

4. Training and Support:

- Manufacturer Support: Choose a manufacturer that offers comprehensive training for you and your staff to ensure safe and effective use of the equipment. Ask about online portals for training, details of the inservice, ongoing support and training after purchase.

- Customer Service: Ensure the company provides reliable customer support and has a good reputation for service and maintenance.

5. Regulatory Compliance and Safety:

- FDA Approval: Ensure the laser is FDA-approved for the treatments you plan to offer, which guarantees that it has met safety and efficacy standards. The FDA provides a database of current approved devices: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfPMN/pmn.cfm

- Safety Features: Look for lasers with built-in safety features, such as automatic shut-off mechanisms and protective eyewear, to safeguard both your staff and clients.

Considering these factors will help you select a laser that meets your medical spa's needs, enhances your service offerings, and provides a safe and effective experience for your patients.
